Where does your water come from?
How this quiz works
Choosing home water treatment is a matching problem, not a shopping problem. A well house with iron staining needs completely different equipment than a city apartment with chlorine taste, and most “best water softener” lists ignore that. This quiz asks the seven questions a good plumber would ask first: where your water comes from, what problem you actually want to fix, how many bathrooms the system has to feed, what you want to spend, whether salt-based softening is acceptable to you, whether you own or rent, and what matters most long-term.
Where the recommendations come from
Every system in the quiz’s pool comes from our research database: prices are checked on the manufacturer’s own store and dated on screen, specs come from official spec sheets, and certifications are verified against the certifying body. The scoring is deliberately simple and fully transparent, matching your main problem weighs the most, then fit with your budget and household size, then your stated priority such as a lifetime warranty or the lowest upfront cost. Your result screen shows exactly which of your answers each recommendation matched, so you can judge the logic yourself. If nothing in our tested lineup genuinely fits, a renter who needs a whole-house fix, for example, the quiz says so instead of forcing a bad pick.
What the quiz does not do
It does not replace a water test. If you are on a private well, a lab test (or at minimum a home test kit) is the only way to know your iron, hardness and pH numbers, the quiz points you to the right category of equipment, and your test results size it. It also never sells your answers: there is no email gate and nothing is stored. You can read the full details of how we evaluate products on our methodology page.
